Since founding San Francisco design gallery De Sousa Hughes in 1999,  Geoffrey De Sousa and Erik Hughes have sought out the most original makers of their day. For two decades, they have crossed America and Europe to seek out artisans defining a new generation of craftsmanship: the woodworkers, glassblowers, hand printers, bronze casters, textile weavers, and ceramicists who are breathing new life into ancient processes. In the Making, their first book, pays homage to the talents driving the 21st-century maker movement.

The exquisitely crafted, 275-page book features hundreds of superb photographs, 36 inspiring stories, and commissioned illustrations. The book is itself a tactile object, unfolding in sensual papers, thoughtful typography, and a hand-embossed cover.  In its pages, artisans share the hugely varied stories of their origins, struggles, and successes, all unified by risk, rigor, sweat, passion, and practice. Designers profiled range from globally recognized artisans like Christopher Farr, Timorous Beasties, and Jonathan Browning to local Bay Area makers Michael McEwen, Erin McGuiness, and Cliff Hersh.

Masterful craft and storytelling bound together in one object, In the Making will inspire all those moved by the beauty and necessity of the handmade.
